What is the comparison between The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men?

I was just wondering because I am doing an essay on Of mice and Men and I have to compare it to another piece of literature and people told me the Great Gatsby but the problem is I never really read it but heard of it. So if anyone is kind enough to help me I'd appreciate it thanks :)What is the comparison between The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men?
The Great Gatsby is a novel by the American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. First published on April 10, 1925, it is set in Long Island's North Shore and New York City during the summer of 1922.

The novel chronicles an era that Fitzgerald himself dubbed the ';Jazz Age';. Following the shock and chaos of World War I, American society enjoyed unprecedented levels of prosperity during the ';roaring'; 1920s as the economy soared. At the same time, Prohibition, the ban on the sale and manufacture of alcohol as mandated by the Eighteenth Amendment, made millionaires out of bootleggers and led to an increase in organized crime. Although Fitzgerald, like Nick Carraway in his novel, idolized the riches and glamor of the age, he was uncomfortable with the unrestrained materialism and the lack of morality that went with it.

http://www.awerty.com/greatgp2.htmlWhat is the comparison between The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men?
They are both about the American dream destroyed. The Great Gatsby speaks to the corruption of the roaring twenties and Jay Gatsby's corrupted American dream. Of Mice and Men speaks to the American dream shattered through isolation and depression. Of Mice and Men is more than a little book about a certain time and place; it covers friendship and sacrifice, not to mention a healthy dose of the bittersweet futility of holding onto dreams.

From Shmoop/Lit
Ignore the stupidity of some of the other answers- whiny little school-kiddies. Heaven forbid you should actually think about what you're reading!

The key theme of the two is dreams. George and Lennie want to run a big farm together, and Gatsby wants Daisy- who represents wealth and perfection.

Of Mice and Men is set in the thirties, depression-era- just after Gatsby, and the roaring twenties. Of mice and Men is the consequence of Gatsby.
I agree with the last answer and would also mention how different they both are. While dealing with the same time period, the financial status of characters in either novels could not be more different. This is indicative of the time period.
Both are same color and of four chambered heart.both have approx.same body systems so the experiments are done by the scientist are on mice.
Both were books that I was forced to read in school. Damn you educational system!!!
They both are boring books forced upon us in 10th grade English class

Do you keep breeding mice/rats in the same room as your snakes?

I recently acquired 2 rats, male and female. The cage is near our snake terrarium, but I'm wondering if they'll smell them, and attack us when we pick them up! (Smell food, see heat coming

toward them...)

The rats are pets. The previous owner was allergic. We aren't going to feed our rats to them, (too big anyway-- 1 yr old ball pythons!) but if they have babies, we may consider them!Do you keep breeding mice/rats in the same room as your snakes?
As Maranda says as long as you wash your hands between them and not hold them on your clothes and arms BEFORE or going right over to the snakes then you should not have any problems. I had a 3 tier mouse breeding habitat right next to the rehab snake tanks and never had a problem.

Snakes are weird like that sometimes. I had one that would NOT eat live at all which was great but one time, one escaped and crawled in his tank and we think he was in there a few days when we found him hanging out with Dr. Phil..... it was sleeping on top his coils. I had another escapee that lived with the guinea pigs for a week we were going to take him out of there right away but it was so cute and they weren't hurting him, then we saw it was a she and she had babies in the corner and so we had to re-introduce her back to her own kindDo you keep breeding mice/rats in the same room as your snakes?
As far as my opinion you are fine to have them in the same room. At one point in time my pet snake actually had a pet rat. It just decided not to ever eat it. I put in other rats while his pet was living with him and he ate the others just fine. This lasted for 2 years. As long as you are washing your hands in between pets I think you will be fine.
i raised rodents and kept snakes but i never kept them in the same room. rodents have a keen sense of smell and can smell the snakes and they will get stressed out and the snakes can smell/taste the rats in the air and that will stress the snakes out. the snakes will smell rats in the air and might be likely to strike at you when you go in their cage to get them out.

Is it normal for mice to rub in circles?

like chase their tail?

I thought its cage was too small, but it does it on the floor too. Is it just a retarded mouse? Is it normal for mice to rub in circles?
I havent heard of a mouse chasing its tail before. If your mouse can only turn in one direction this is usually a sign that something is wrong. Mice are very active though and will run around a small cage endlessly as this is very normal. Your mouse is possibly looking for a way out. Does your cage have a wheel(exercise) and house(to hide)? Also your mouse may improve with company. Hopefully your mouse is not retarded. A vet, even the pet shop should be able to help you further. Good luck.

  • How did the social and historical context impact John Steinbeck's writing when he was writing Of Mice and Men?

I'm writing an essay on the novel Of Mice and Men, and for the conclusion I need to 'sum up how the social and historical context would have impacted Steinbeck's writing at that time'.How did the social and historical context impact John Steinbeck's writing when he was writing Of Mice and Men?
Well, I don't know how much this would help, but here's what I do know:

The story itself was set in and written during Depression Era California. People were looking for work in this area, to no avail (in the near future, ';Okies'; would be a crude name for people from OK looking for a far distant better life in California). Futures were uncertain. A sense of ';self'; was hard to obtain. Security was an idea that seemed too lofty to reach.

Steinbeck himself was somewhat of a hobo in the 1920's and also experienced the longing of the ';American Dream,'; like Lenny and George did. His experiences and the experiences of the majority of Americans during the Depression definitely played a huge part in the writing of this novel.

    Mice !!??????

    I have two questions...

    1. do i have a phobia of mice? because i have 1 in my basement and my mom saw but i didnt and i will NOT EVER go down there. Also, i was just taking a shower and i thought i saw a white mouse where the hole is for the water to get out of the bath and i didnt scream or anything but i really got petrified and joged out of the bathroom and my mom is asleep %26amp; i dont want to wake her up.And i went through a phase where i heard slighht sounds from mice in the ceiling or walls i dont know...

    2. Can mice get up the hole where the bathtub is where the water goes down ?

    thx.Mice !!??????
OMG...I hate mice, too!! Yes, I think it is a phobia. Get some traps and bait them with peanut butter. I think they can get in the tub by entering from outside the tub...but,not up through the pipe.Mice !!??????
no , If you are talking about the drain im sure a mouse couldn't come up thruogh the drain.
Well if there is a filter in the drain they cant like in the drain if there is 6 little holes or something then it cant but if it is just a plain hole then it might well it connects to the sewers so it probably was not a mouse your probably seeing things once i seen a giant spider that looked like a tarantula i thought i saw it running around on my bed and i was in my bed i jumped out of bed turned on the light but i was seeing things it was just a sock your probably seeing things
    Get a cat.

How do you get rid of mice in an attic above your bedroom?

Mice in atticHow do you get rid of mice in an attic above your bedroom?
First off, moth balls wont work. They believe it is there home so they wont just leave because of the smell. Traps will work but to effectively catch them all you will need 10-20 spred out though the attic. The best way to handle the problem is to put out some poison. Some mouse seed in packets would be best for the attic. Just place them in a grid pattern were there are trails or other sign in the attic.

And as long as the bait is in the attic and not in the living quarters it is completely safe. How do you get rid of mice in an attic above your bedroom?
Hi, Probably the best thing to do is get a trap. There are 2 types of trap, humane and snap traps. The former are little cages which trap the mouse inside but don't kill it, so you have to be prepared to get rid of it still alive. Also with these traps there is the danger it could simply come back into your home or someone else's.

If this doesn't work then best call a pest controller.
mouse trap or mouse poison.... if you want to kill it..... otherwise try to shoo it away......
If you can stand the odor, throw moth balls in the attic. The smell is very strong so be sure you can handle the odor before you use them. Also, the local feed and seed stores here sell mouse poison that kills mice with little smell. I have used it and it works well. Good luck.
Buy a rat snake from the pet shop and let it go in the attic

he will take care of them. sounds like a joke i know

but i have done it and it works! once the mice are gone he will

find a way out (probably the same way the mice got in) and look for food else were. Good luck.

Physicists: What do think of computer mice that are operated by infrared? That is radiation isn't it?

Does anyone have an opinion? Sometimes my hand prickles. Has anyone experienced that?Physicists: What do think of computer mice that are operated by infrared? That is radiation isn't it?
infrared radiation is indeed one of the types of electromagnetic radiation (which by the way includes visible light, radio waves, x-rays and microwave). Such radiation is emitted by any hot body, which is why infrared is also called heat radiation sometimes. As any other type of radiation, it's danger strongly depends on the intensity, e.g. if it's strong, infrared radiation may very well fry you. The intensities which your poor mouse radiates it may never cause any prickles. What you feel is more likely because of the uncomfortable hand position.Physicists: What do think of computer mice that are operated by infrared? That is radiation isn't it?
Visible radiation is also how you see what is on a computer monitor and (assuming you are not blind) see things while walking down the street.

Prickles? I had mouse problems too with a mechanical mouse. Try switching it to the other hand for a few days. Also helps with ambidexterity.
no, it's the same infrared that is in remote controls in TV remotes that controls it. and you hand prickling? probably falling asleep from using the computer too much

Best way to get rid of mice?

We have mice. What is the best way to get rid of them?Best way to get rid of mice?
I just killed 3 in a row in a trap using the same piece of chocolate caramel candy as bait LOL!Best way to get rid of mice?
Borrow a cat for a couple weeks
de con they eat it then go away to die so you dont have to deal wit the dead mice
    Cats.
Use a large bucket, then tightly fasten a string across the top with a paper towel or toilet paper roll on the string. Smear the roll with peanut butter, then put a ramp up to the top of the bucket. Fill the bucket half with water.

The mice will smell the peanut butter, crawl up the ramp to get it, step onto the roll, and PLOP

    There's also another one:

Put a mixture of half plaster of paris and half icing sugar in a plate, then put a bowl of water nearby.

The mice will eat the mixture, then they'll be really thirsty. They will then drink a lot of water, then crawl away somewhere... Soon they will harden up inside, and they won't rot in your walls.
Mice hate pure peppermint oil... sprinkle a few drops of this oil on a cotton ball and place in the areas you see ';evidence';. Pure peppermint oil can be found at most herbal shops.
Put hot sauce on pieces (maybe devide in 4's) of bread and let dry. When dry they are ready to place where needed, which would be behind stove, refreg, behind washer and dry and anywhere else you think you need.

Make sure children and pets can't get to it.

Read an article in paper about this method that was used at a Zoo. Mice never ate it, but took off to parts unknown. Problem solved. Better then setting traps or using live traps.

I still have the article upstairs %26amp; husband is going to do this at the hunting cabin. If it works at a Zoo I say give it a try/

Also, mice are coming in from somewhere. Check your foundation outside and feel for warm spots (that's what mice look for) and plug them up. Also check dryer vent. Check for any small holes in bacement. Check pipes in bacement. Fill in any open spaces around pipes.

If you have attached garage, put hot sauce bread around. You can also put hot sauce bread in bacement too. You're also going to have to fill in holes.

Use the hot sauce, dry bread thing.
Glue traps are the best method to trap mice/rats.
    cucumber peeling's they hate it

  • How much is it to buy mice for my snake online, how much extra to ship?

you can not ship live mice without hte cost being around 150.00 per pound...you would be better off buying frozen or going to a pet shop near you. ShazHow much is it to buy mice for my snake online, how much extra to ship?
don't buy mice online unless they are frozen and already dead of course but it still wont be cheap. i would suggest just going down to your local petstore and buy the mice frozen or live no shipping happy snake. How much is it to buy mice for my snake online, how much extra to ship?
    eeeeewwwww
See this website - they are one of the best for prices, especially if you buy bulk.

    http://www.rodentpro.com/
It doesn't cost very much to ship frozen mice. Just do a search of 'frozen mice' and you'll get several places that will ship them to you.
yes i have found shipping to be high for frozen rodents unless your buying lots of them then you save a little bit o money, the reason shipping is expensive is because they have to ship overnight and morning delivery because ....well..... They are frozen!!!!!! so unless your buying large quantities it is cheaper to find a local shop who sells frozen rodents.

to save even more money i started breeding my own rodents, i own 7 medium to large species boa and pythons.

    good luck and happy herping
A couple sites you might want to check out... rodentpro.com, micedirect.com, bigcheesefactory.com. Kingsnake.com also has a much larger list of reptile feeder suppliers in case none of those i suggested tickle your fancy :)
To keep a snake in captivity and feed mice to it -- who do not have any chance of escape as they do in the wild, is totally inhumane. You need to get rid of the snake and find something else to occupy your time....like a job or a hobby that doesn't involve cruelty. Why don't you try shopping or scrapbooking....take in a ball game or go hiking. Leave nature to take care of itself; it doesn't need your help.

Does anyone know of any experiments that a highschooler can do that involves mice?

Does anyone know of any experiments that a highschooler can do that involves mice?

I was thing about genetics in the eye color and fur color of mice or differnent types of food. I also read that supplements can make them fat, so I could do that maybe...any ideas?Does anyone know of any experiments that a highschooler can do that involves mice?
What time frame are you working with? Genetics may take a while to work through breeding cycles.

You could experiment with human junk food vs pet food vs natural fruits and vegtable diets. You could track condition of fur, overall health, and weight while on these diets.

There are many behavior experiments you could do as well. You could expose the mice to heavy metal vs classical music vs no music and see if there is any difference in their intelligence in figuring out rat mazes. Another one is to have one mouse with a pretty bare cage vs a social cage with lots of 'toys' to see if there is a difference in the way they handle new stimulus or tackle a puzzle to solve.Does anyone know of any experiments that a highschooler can do that involves mice?
Why do you want to torture innocent creatures? Where is your humanity?

Can a building management company be sued for if you get sick from mice?

We have had a problem with mice in our apartment building for about a year now and the only thing that management has done is set sticky traps around the apartments. They haven't done a great job of plugging up the holes in which mice travel through to get from one apartment to another. Just the other day, we found mice droppings on my sons floor and we vacuumed it up (i found out that's a no-no) and now I'm starting to feel muscle aches and fatigue (which is associated with the Hanta Virus?) I'm just wondering if the owners of the apartment can be sued for not doing enough to treat this problem and also for people getting illnesses for exposure to mice and their droppings? Can a building management company be sued for if you get sick from mice?
Contact your local health department and report the situation. Be prepared to report what you have done about it so far - contacting management (and how many times you contacted them, give dates and the responses you got to your complaints), contacting the owner(s), setting your own traps, etc.

It's best to make contacts with building management in writing rather than by phone call. Create documents in a word program on your computer. That way you have files that can be printed out again.

You cannot claim that your muscle aches and fatigue are associated with the mice unless you have in writing a recent diagnosis of hantavirus. At this time, you have no grounds for a lawsuit. Can a building management company be sued for if you get sick from mice?
You need to find a copy of your lease and get a lawyer. More than likely your landlord is responsible for taking care of the issue by a professional and make a safe environment for you and your family.
Yes they can be sued I don't know the whole thing so i wouldn't know the evidence and what not but it is the managers job to keep the apartment clean and tidy so from the information you put in the box i would say you have a decent case to sue the apartment and also see a doctor
you can call the health inspectors =this is a hazard and the landlord is supposed to get an exterminator in to get rid of them =good luck with getting the right kind of help

What is the delay on wireless mice?

I use a $30.00 wireless mouse for FPS (first person shooters). What is the delay on a wireless mouse versus a wired mouse? If I go out and buy a $70.00 wired gaming mouse will I notice the difference in my speed/reaction time? What is the delay on wireless mice?
$30 for a wireless mouse is pretty cheap. I imagine the mouse you have isn't very good and not made for gaming (is it a laptop mouse?). The delay could just be cheap electronics or it could be some sort of interference in the air. Try putting the mouse on a different channel. It could also be low batteries.

Gaming mice (wired or wireless) have a much more precise tracking light or laser which makes them a lot more responsive. They also sometimes have Teflon feet to help them glide more smoothly.

However, I don't like wireless mice of gaming because gaming really wears down the batteries fast. It SUCKS having them die on you in the middle of a game. What is the delay on wireless mice?
The delay should not be noticeable. I would say that its just that mouse if you are noticing delays. I would return it for another.

And a mouse will not increas your reaction time. Only your brain can do that.

How do i get rid of mice in my house?

tried radars, traps, the little blighters still under the floor boards, cant afford pest removal, any ideasHow do i get rid of mice in my house?
i got some mouse traps from ebay and i find the mice love milky way, dont use cheese they dont like it. keep setting them until you havent caught one for several days good luckHow do i get rid of mice in my house?
Shoot them! Or you can get a small dog like a chihuahua or Yorkshire Terrier. Thier ancestors were mouse hunters so they will catch mice (like a cat) but dogs are a million times better than a cat. Shooting them with a small caliber gun is fun too!
Get a dog. I heard that a dog was more effective at eliminating mice than cats.
get a few mates round and have a few beers then set traps and put bets on them. i would get a cat or just use rat bait, it takes time to work but does the trick. the only thing is if they die under the floor boards they will smell for a while!
    Get a big cat.
    cats, lots of cats
I had this problem in my old flat. The poo on the kitchen worktops in the mornings drove me nuts, and them running across the room when friends were round was terminally embarrassing. I finally had it when one ran across my pillow.

I called the council, and they put traps down, but I'm a bit of a wuss and took them up before they caught anything. Then a friend offered to lend me her kitten. It lived with me for two days. When it saw a mouse, it was transfixed, because it was young %26amp; had never seen one before, but they knew what IT was..... and I never saw them again!

The kitten's smell must've got to them, even though it didn't actually catch any. They moved house. Good luck!
    get a cat x x
get a cat or better still, move
Please don't use glue traps or poison. Glue traps are so cruel that they've actually been outlawed in some countries. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. It can take three to five days for them to die. If you find a live mouse stuck in a glue trap, you can put it in a box, pour vegetable oil around the mouse to loosen the glue, and gently push it off the trap with a pencil or spoon. Then, you can release it outside. Of course, this is messy and stressful for both you and the mouse, so it's better to not use them in the first place.

Poison isn't any better, as the mice die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die, and then they smell as they rot behind your walls.

I've had great success with this live trap in my house:

    http://veganstore.com/index.html?stocknu鈥?/a>

It鈥檚 also available for $2 cheaper here (although I prefer to buy it from the other place since I鈥檓 not a big fan of PETA):

    https://www.petacatalog.org/prodinfo.asp鈥?/a>

I've caught over a dozen mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:

    http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_l鈥?/a>

If you do live trap mice, please be sure to check the traps several times a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home. It is much more cruel to allow a mouse in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. When you release the mice, do it in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants.

If you feel you must kill the mice, snap traps are the most humane alternative.
get some cats and let them eat the little mice or you can just keep the little mice as a pet if you want to get rid of them get a bucket of water put some peanutbutter on the tip of the bucket the peanutbutter will attract the mice and when they get ontop of the bucket they stick to the peanutbutter and they fall in the water and then they drawnit really works it is a really old trick but a very mean trick just get a big fat cat but then if it is like my cats they will not eat a little mouse because they get fed to good
We adopted a kitten that was born near our house. We feed her some cat food once or twice a day. She only lets us near her and she and her cat friends keep the mice away. She is an outdoor cat.
get a cat are maybe borrow a friends cat if you don't want one just until they have been caught, you poor thing it must be really distressing for you i no i had them once and it really upset me, i hope you get it sorted soon
Borrow someones cat or get one yourself (and you will never have mice again)
    get you a mouser (CAT).
I used warfarin.I lifted a couple boards and spread it around.I havent had them back now for 5 years
get a cat....worked for me1!!! Orrrrr...put peanut butter in the mouse traps, works like a champ!!!
Get in touch with enviromental health.

    It does not cost anything.
it all depends on what outcome you want.

if you want death then the obvious answer is get a cat

if not my weedy sis in law uses something called scram which gets rid of the little things without killing them good luck
Bait your traps with chocolate the little blighters love it!! Much better than cheese.

Or get some ferrets, cute pets and oh boy dont get mice when they're around.
well you could use bigger traps, use Spanish Chorizo sausage if you can find this where you live. they never pass this without having a nibble also put mothballs and peppermint oil around . they hate the smell of these 2 things , mice only live where there is a fresh supply of food , so if you have pets make sure you remove there food when they finish , sweep the kitchen floor at night ,don麓t leave any food lying around for them to nibble on keep things high up in tight lid containers, remove any bar soap candles , anything really they use and eat everything , but try this bate your sure to catch them with this , they can cause a lot of damage and if the start to eat through the electrical wires they can cause a fire , try these things and remember don麓t invite them for dinner, and they will soon pack there suitcases and move to another hotel
Clean your house. Get a cat and get some mouse traps. Then check to find where they are coming in. Steel wool is a deterrent

because the mouse can't chew through it. Seal up any outside holes where mice can get in and if you live near an elevator or grain storage bin-get used to having the blighters around!
    buy a cat
    Get a cat.

Sounds corny I know, but we had the same problem with mice.

I went and got a cat, about 4 months old, haven't had the problem since.
Where did you put the traps? In the middle of the room I bet! Well try right at the edge of the skirting boards about half way along the wall (where the bottom of the wall meets the floor. Mice have runs, so try each position of the traps for about 2 or 3 nights. Dont put cheese in the traps only mickey mouse and other cartoon characators eat that.....try small pieces of bread......or even ham. Good Luck.
I like everyone's idea of a cat. But you can also buy the poison food stuff. They eat it and then go off and die. Works great.
Had the same problem, cat didn't work, poison does. Every year the mice come in for the winter, but they die. Poison is available thru good hard ware stores, garden centres, smallholding suppliers . BE AWARE poison will kill pets and you if you had sufficient quantity (unlikely). One year the mice gnawed thru the poison container to get to it. A sort of do it yourself job!
I use Victor Mouse Traps and you don't even have to touch any part near the mouse when cought
Get a rat vicious cat. It works all the time.
    play the wagner`s flute.
Besides getting a cat, Wal-Mart and nurseries (plant stores) sell rat and mouse poison. It comes in little trays. Its bait that the mice eat. It works. Don't use it in the open if you do have a cat.

Mice in the ceiling at work? What do I do?

I'm at work right now, trying to play my part in society by answering questions on yahoo answers until my 9-5 shift is over and then I realize there's mice in the ceiling.

Do they usually fall from the drop ceiling to jump on people and stuff like that?

I need a new job. Is there an internship opening at Vogue?

I bet they don't have mice running around their ceilings.Mice in the ceiling at work? What do I do?
Mice are more afraid of you than you are of them. Don't use poison to get rid of them, they will die above the cieiling or in a wall someplace and cause a stink. Spend 1.50 and buy a couple of mouse traps, put some peanut butter on the trip lever and stick them up above the ceiling. Throw the trap and mouse away when you have caught your prey great white hunter.Mice in the ceiling at work? What do I do?

Where I live mice are an ongoing challenge in the dry season. This is what we do.

First get rid of the ones you already have. They tend to run usually along the base of walls or on top of the kitchen cabinets if there is a space. Mouse traps of which there are several types, using sticky pads but then you will have to drown the rodents before disposal, or use rat poison, but then you may have to deal with the smell for a day or two.

Second get in the habit of not leaving anything edible lying about in the apartment ... on kitchen counters, in sinks, or anywhere so the mice have no food to come to. Sorry, general cleanup here, use vinegar or baking soda. Leave little containers of baking soda in the cupboards and drawers to deter them and to freshen the cupboards generally.

Third, find out how they are getting in and close the holes or cracks, not with wood obviously. Mice can get in through the smallest cracks. Check the baseboards under the kitchen cabinets and sink. Fill with some kind of hard filler for plaster, I use Rockite, or plastic wood dough for wood areas. Screen the windows if you leave them open and you can use a thin layer of white lime or borax in the base. They tend not to cross these barriers.

If you do not own the apartment then choose what you find suitable from these suggestions.

If you do opt to get a cat, especially if you have never owned a pet before, make sure it is a mouser and not a lazybones waiting for a tin of catfood. As an apartment dweller there is also maintenance of the animal .. scratch poles, cat litter boxes etc. as well as what to do if you go out or away. Check with a vet or lots on the web about cats.

    Hope all this helps.
Take the key from them or change the locks
you can buy a pair of cats or adopt some from a shelter, get some that aren't declawed so they can pounce on their prey...most cats instinctively hunt at night and when the mice come out they can easily detect them and they will eat them..all you have to do is dispose of the carcusses...and eventually mice will no longer enter the house when they sense a cat...good luck
this is fair dinkum mate. get a small boa constrictor at the pet shop and let it have the run of the place but keep the bathroom door shut, always. I had two and never had a problem. tell no one and everything will be just fine. when u ren out of mice just get one once a week or so from the store that sells mice and feed it. boas are great pets

Can i switch my snake from eating live mice to dead mice?

I have been feeding my ball python live mice can i switch him to eating frozen mice? If so how do i do this. Can i switch my snake from eating live mice to dead mice?
Its possible, and make sure to experiment with it. An easy way to get the snake to make the transition is to start feeding him fresh killed rodents. It may cause you to feel a bit morbid, but if it is fresh killed, all the natural body heat remains in the rodent's body, and to the snake it still seems alive.

Once the switch has been made, the method of thawing the rodent goes somewhat like this:

Place the frozen rodent into a plastic bag and submerse into a bowl of water a bit warmer than room temp. Once the rodent has thawed completely, you can move on to the process of warming. I would suggest warming it with your heat lamp as that is a good way to find the right temps. If you feel like a quick warming a hair dryer set on low will get the job done. But make sure not to get too close to the rodent with the dryer or it will smell burnt, which can deter the snake from eating it. A mouse's internal body temperature is about 98.4 degrees Fahrenheit, which can be measured to a relative temp with a regular household thermometer. Its not necessary to be right on with the temps so once again, feel free to experiment. Once the rodent has been warmed, grab some feeding tongs or hemostat and grip the rodent by either the tail, or the nape of the neck. I would suggest by the neck, as it looks more natural, and gives the snake a clean shot at the head.

The truth is, some ball pythons can be really rough to switch, while others can take frozen thawed at the first glance. It all depends on the snake really. I would say that going from live to f/k (fresh killed) to f/t (frozen thawed) would be the way to go. But like I said earlier, feel free to experiment with it. Change it up. Good luck! Can i switch my snake from eating live mice to dead mice?
Of course you can, although you might have to make sure its heated, just put it in a bag and in warm water until its roughly body temp. Then wiggle it in front of the snake with some tongs. Generally the snake wont care, but if it does, you can try to train it to eat frozen, by getting a live smaller mouse/rat (rats are much better - less fat - more nutrients) and feeding that first, then using a dead one second while the snake is still in 'feeding mode'. It might take a few tries of that before it will readily accept dead food. You should never use live food, it can fight back and cause massive problems for your snake. Infection even death. Frozen or pre-killed all the way.
Hi Austin, I am usually extreamly lucky in switching from live to frozen, hopefully you are too with my help.

Ball pythons as you probably know are picky but I think you can do it no doubt actually!

1st your snake needs to be use to feeding with tongs- If it is, great! If not, try feeding live with tongs.

2nd Once he is use to it, you can get a frozen mouse or rat and defrost it. of course, best way and LUCKIEST way is to warm it with your heat lamp!!!!****

It will be beyond perfect for you ball python.

3rd. Once is thawed and heat up, try to be fast and feed it!I

I got to tell you, all my ball pythons have been successful in switching following this rules!

    Good luck Austin!
Yes you can.Buy frozen mice from your local pet store and when its feeding time, put the frozen mice inside a ziplock bag,use lurk warm water to defrost(make sure the mice is defrosted completely, the warmer the stronger the smell for the snake).Either leave the mice inside the cage or use tongs to put the mice in front of your snake.

NEVER USE YOUR HANDS TO HOLD THE MICE IN FRONT OF A SNAKE!

If you can't get a hold onto any frozen mice you can order online:

    www.rodentpro.com

    www.micedirect.com

    www.feedermiceunlimited.com

    Hope I'd help
You can but shouldn't they are predators not scavengers, respect that. If you are afraid of the prey item use tongs, if you are afraid of injury to your pet use hopper mice or large fuzzy rats.Respect the natural programming and allow instinct to prevail!
Yes, but the main difference is the heat.

Since the food inside the snake is still half alive (Or fully alive, who knows, eh?) it gives heat to the snake...so I'm not sure how you can heat it before giving it to him. Maybe someone else knows...i think a microwave might just make the mice go splat lol
Yep, thaw them out in warm water, use tongs, dip them in chicken broth, and hold them in front of the snake with the tongs, when he's good and hungry.
if u have forceps grab it by the tail and move it a round in front of ur ball python

How long do baby mice need their mom for?????

I got 2 boy mice a while ago and one had babies!?!?! How long do the babies need their mom for?????How long do baby mice need their mom for?????
The mother begins to wean them at 2 weeks and is finished around 4 weeks. 4 weeks is the absolute earliest they can be taken away from her, but it is recommended to keep them together until 5 weeks. They sexes should definitely be separated by 6 weeks, or the males will mate the mother and their sisters.

If you have not done so already, remove the father from the cage as he will mate the mother again, as well as his daughters when they are old enough. Good luck with your mice! How long do baby mice need their mom for?????
untill 5 weeks i belive at 5 weeks they should be seperated males from females (the mother and father should be seperated ASAP) once the males are sexually mature they can be placed with the father. do not sell them or give them away to people untill they are 6 weeks old though

Can I feed pinky mice to my pet turtle?

He's a big boy so I'm sure he can eat em with no problems but would he actually go for them and are they healthy for him? It's a red eared slider by the way.Can I feed pinky mice to my pet turtle?
Yes you could...they do eat anything that';';';'; MOVES';';....

They can have garden worms which I collect after a good rain and dump them in the pond, also meal worms, snails, crickets, flies, crayfish small frogs, slugs, tadpoles, ghost shrimp , dragon flies and anything that moves, but only as a treat.

They need leafy greens Romaine, Butter lettuce, grapes.

It would probably be okay to feed it to him once a month AT MOST..if you give him to much it would be very fatty.

also they need to be dead..dont feed him live ones...does your local pet store sell frozen pinkies? if so buy one and thaw it out and try..theres a chance he might not even eat it and expect to clean your tank if he does , itll be messy!
    Yes. If its big enough.

I watched some videos of this on Youtube yesterday and the turtles looked like they loved it....even though turtles seem to eat and love just about everything

but yea go on youtube and u can find people feeding ADULT rats to turtles
NO!!! iv had turtles for years...you don't want to feed them mice...its bad for there digestive track... the best thing to feed them is minnows the small ones used for fishing. and earthworms...its fun to dangle the worms above their heads and watch them eat
No do not they do not like them and they are fattening. also they dont see them in nature. and dont say ';well they do not see prepared diets in the wild.'; Just dont give him pinkies.
Yes it is ok- your turtle will love it.

Pink mice are high in fat, however, as another poster suggested.

They should not be fed more than as an occasional treat.
yes definatly but only give it 1 every so often or it'll get fat mine will eat them also they will eat feeder gold fish if they are big enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wouldnt to my red eared slider.

and why kill a LIVE mice if you dont have to.,..
i wouldn't. they are bad for their digestive systems and makes them fat

Where can I buy a chemical that repels rats and mice?

I tried an electronic one that you plug in and it emits an ultrasonic pulse, but it was not effectiveWhere can I buy a chemical that repels rats and mice?
Yea I saw that on MSN I think. Some scent that repells ratsWhere can I buy a chemical that repels rats and mice?
The twin speaker ones are much more effective than the singles that plug straight into the socket. There is a liquid called Renardine, but it is not suitable for use inside as it has a very strong smell!!
Foster a cat until your mouse problem goes away. :-)
Any good hardware store but personally i found the electronic one ideal, is yours working properly ?you know that it is only the rats and mice that are suppose to hear it.
Don't know of anything that repels but you can use glue boards. They are real sticky and mice get stuck on them. Then you still have to discard the critter. You can find them at hardware stores but be sure not to touch sticky surface. You will find that they will be hard to remove as my 2 yr. old niece did, in her curly hair. Place them out of reach of kids. I have been told that mice will not go anywhere near where the sense a cat has been. Find someone with a cat and get their used kitty litter and spread it around house. The scent may keep the mice away. It's a thought!!
Dont use chemicals why would you even think about killing them!!!??? Just buy a cat and let the cat take care of the mice
go to home depotand buy these little square blocks i don't know what there called but there green squareand very cheap but they really work
Doesn't sound to me that you want to kill them! Good call. I don't know of anything other than the sonic ones that repel them and I have heard that some work and some don't. Maybe try a different make? I know this could get expensive but can't think of anything else. Perhaps you could ask for recomendations for ones that do work.

    All the best.
most diy stores sell them.b q, or sainsburys home base, wicks stores.
the sonic ones are really the only ones that are trully effective and not going to kill them....the big catch ...and i am really suprised no one has pointed this out...they are only good for something like 9 feet from the actual emitter.....thus you have to put them every 9 feet in your house to trully get rid of them, otherwise you just get rid of them in that part of the room that the emitter is...and this makes it very expensive if you have a big house
Poison works best because they go outside to die and stops them from reproducing. Don't use those sonic things because they are expensive and hard to tell if they are working. Your best bet is to remove them effectively before they reproduce. Use poison, they go outside to die and prevents infestation which is messy, cruel, and requires the exterminators.
get one of those sonic dodads they brill... and you can get what you want at b%26amp;q or any pet shop
Cheap, safe and yet very effective is Moth Balls -

We had a camper with terrible rodent problems, they would

even come up through the floor, someone told me about moth balls and we haven't had a problem since. I just laid them all outside lining around the camper - I also like them better than pesticides, etc because we have a small children and a dog. Good luck!

How long does it take to rid a house of mice?

Depends on your resources and how many mice there are.

If you have a cat that's always a bonus.

Make sure you get plenty of decent traps and put them horizontally next to the wall in areas where the mice are likely to feed. Mice run along walls so this will be more effective. Poison is always an option but if you have other animals or children this could be dangerous. How long does it take to rid a house of mice?
All of these answers are fine...just PLEASE promise me ONE THING!!! DO NOT USE THE INHUMANE STICKY GLUE TRAPS!!! When they get stuck to theses they DO NOT DIE! They are just stuck, and they writhe around till they break their own bones, and they cry and squeak and try to chew off their own limbs to get out. It is very sad and really CRUEL to use this method. If you want to use poison, or a cat that's fine...at least it'll be humane. There are even LIVE TRAPS! Which I would suggest. Sorry, I'm a mouse owner. I understand your dilemma...but try to handle your situation WHILE being humane. We are ALL Gods creatures. How long does it take to rid a house of mice?
I tried poison. They ate the poison...the box it came in...and then they asked to see the dessert cart. Get the traps that snaps their little necks and bait it with peanut butter. That always works. Good luck!
Get a cat, You dont have to reset it. You dont have to worry about poisons. And if you have a lot of mice, you probably wont have to feed it much, hehehe
use the electric things that make noise, they are GREAT

it should work in a few days to a week
depending on the method that you use. when my house had mice i set up some mouse traps and the mice were gone in a few days.

I'm guessing that you kept males and females together, and ended up with a ton of babies? If your kids still want to keep some of them, make sure that any you keep are of the same gender so that they won't have more babies. (And make sure the females you keep aren't already pregnant.)

Right away, you should separate the males and females (make sure the pinkies stay with their mother, though; they can't breed until they're five weeks old). You don't want even MORE babies.

Wait until the pinkies are six weeks old before giving them away. Advertise free mice; you could put an ad in the paper, or have your kids ask their friends if any want pet mice. Pet stores may take some of them, though those might end up as snake food. (Sad fact of the world.) If you have any takers, make sure they only get mice that are of the same gender so they don't have another rodent population explosion of their own.
If you give them to the pet sotre, the pinkies will be re-sold as snake food, so try to avoid that option.

I think you should advertise them on Craigslist. There are a lot of postings on there for pets- just put ';Free to a good home,'; and make sure you mention that their cage comes with the mice if they take them all together. That way, the mice can stay with their family members!
Some pet stores will take them and offer them up for adoption petco does for sure. Put some signs up in your local vets offices/pet stores or laundromats with your phone on the sign, and whatever other info you may need to convey.

Just be sure whoever gets them isn't going to use them as food.

What colours do pet mice come in?

I am looking for a pet mouse but i want to know what colours are available?

can i know from someone who has experienced it, how often to clean out their cage?

is Crittertrail a good brand for mice cages? What colours do pet mice come in?
I don't use cages, 10 gallon tanks are easier to clean and allow for more creativity. Plus the price is much better. Mice don't care if they have expensive fancy cages. They'd rather have toilet paper rolls to chew than plastic sparkley tubes any day.

Buck cages should be cleaned every five days and doe cages should be cleaned once a week.

Mice come in TONS of colors and varieties! I have two siamese mice, one has long fur (angora). I have a spotted ressesive yellow one (yellowy orange and white) and two little black mice. I also used to have a splashed/varigated siamese, but he died :(

They also come in blue, brown, shades of yellow, white, lilac, argente, cream, etc. Theres a bunch of varieties too: rump white, broken marked, even marked, pointed, dutch, etc. But pet stores often only have self or broken marked mice. Just remember that color doesn't matter, make sure your mouse is healthy and friendly. Infact, get a mouse you think everyone else will think is ';ugly'; to help save him/her from snakes. moth balls.
    Get a cat
There are small devices that plug into your wall outlets that emit a very high frequency. They supposedly deter mice, roaches, spiders, etc. If all else fails, get a cat.
    Remove sources of open food.

    Keep them in metal containers.

    Trash, too!

Keep food sources away from your trailer.

You will see much less of them.
    cat
It would cost you a small fortune, for mice and rats...

Go to the local hardware store, (You would probably have to order this, from them or the internet), and get some ';stainless steel'; wire mesh.

Mice and rats can not get through stainless steel mesh, but you have to cover your entire trailer bottom with it..(see, why I told you it would be expensive?).

So, you get the mesh, and tack it up to the bottom of your trailer, or make a frame to hold the mesh up against it.

(personally I would get some metal angle iron to make a frame, and do it right, by coating and painting the angle iron, and putting the wire, on the angle and having another piece of straight bar metal and bolting it up to the angle, trapping the wire mesh between that and the frame.

From a friend I heard that chocolate works really well. The mice love it and when they eat, they have a heart attack and die. There's a part of me that feels bad for the mice, but then again, they are a health concern. Better to get rid of them than risk any health problems.

You could probably do this if you get desperate.

Good luck with your darlings! %26lt;3
I have never really had much experience on mice, but I think they come in a lot of different colours, depending on the parents really. You should clean out its cage about once a week.

    moth balls.

Other than that, I don't know a way to keep mice from coming in. Sorry.

What are some of your likes and dislikes about ';Of Mice and Men'; ?

The 1992 Movie version. Not the book or the earlier movies.

Do you think the movie accurately portays life during the depression? I'm writing a critical essay on it and all the opinions I can get help.

I love that story it's very well written and yes I think it does a very good job with portraying that time period.

Is there a terrier breed that would still kill mice?

We have a ranch %26amp; there is always a big mouse problem. This would be a housepet (terrier) for me but it would be great if it would find and kill mice also. Our last dog was 1/2 Pit 1/2 Rhodesian Ridgeback and he could stay in the same room with a mouse for hours - he acted like it wouldn't be worth the trouble %26amp; why didn't I get the mouse myself? LOLIs there a terrier breed that would still kill mice?
Most have provided you with good answers. The Dachshund is an excellent ratter and was used to create the Miniature Pinscher which is a notorious ratter so long as it is a true Miniature Pinscher and not an undersized ';min pin or mini pin'; which generally is useless at this job. The Miniature Pinscher is in fact a terrier not a toy breed and was developed in the 1600's for ferreting out mice and rats on German farms. They were introduced as breed stock approx 65 years ago to the American Rat Terrier. Any of these breeds in addition to the Parson John Russell Terrier (JRT) are instinctively trained to still perform this function as a Border Collie or Australian Shepherd still have herding instincts, these breeds will instinctively go after rats and mice. I live on a farm and have 13 Miniature Pinschers who crave chasing mice and rats. In addition so does my Italian Greyhound and my German Pinscher, which was also bred for ratting and guard. Is there a terrier breed that would still kill mice?
Miniature Pinscher were used as varmint killers, I'm pretty sure several small breed terriers like the rat terrier or even the jack russel would do well also, as long as you haven't laid any poisons for the mice or rats. Also a few feline would do just fine also. Do some research on some different breeds and make your decision on what you are looking for. Dogs or cats, you still have to worry about what kinds of diseases a rat can carry and pass on to your rodent killer.
I have Ridgebacks and Basenjis, and my tri-colored Basenji is a fabulous mouse hunter. I had a girl living in my extra room and she kept flour in her closet (she had been given cooking items as a Christmas gift with 5 lbs of flour.

She kept her door closed so my Basenji couldn't get in there. When I finally opened the door, mice ran everywhere. My Basenji Ava killed and ate 5 mice in about the space of about 3 minutes.

Basenjis are a hunting breed, hounds, and it's best to go visit a breeder to see if their personalities would suit you and your family. They are not a breed for everyone.

My rescue cat ';Blue'; is a great hunter, too. he goes out the window at night and brings in gophers, mice, and lines them up on the carpet for me to find in the morning when I go in to feed him. Cats are the best mousers.
We had a dog that loved to go to our cherry orchard, and she had a great time catching mice in the long (high) grass around the trees. One time she got a mother and 2 babies in just a couple of swallows (or so said my dad, anywa)! Oh, by the way, she was mostly terrier but a little bit of beagle. The others are right, most dogs will go after a little bit of meat! :)
Well I have a friend that breeds parson russel terriers ( most people know them as Jack Russel Terriers ) and they live on 25 Acres, they have a really big rat, mose and mole problem. These lil dogs are the best! They will kill the rats and mice on the spot. And if they find a hole in the ground and can smell mole they start-a-diggin'!
Terriers and dachshunds are great for rodents. most of the time you don't even have to train them they just love it. I have a terrier cross that is my daughters and I keep her here with me at the shelter. She has dug out the walls of drywall board to get to the mice running around. So if you really want a mouser that is the dog to get. Mine is a schnauser/terrier cross.
Any of the small terriers and dachshunds kill small critters. JRT, Border Terriers, Dachshunds, Norwich/Norfolk etc.

Though the best way is to find a breeder who actively hunts with their dogs. What I do know with Dachshunds is that even the most poorly bred ones still have instinct.
I think the Rat Terrier would be perfect for you...they were bred to be farm dogs and hunt and kill rats. Please read this link and read up on them and you be the judge. ( http://www.nextdaypets.com/directory/bre鈥?/a> )
You might find a terrier that would kill a mouse but it is dependent on the dog. Look for a terrier breeder who competes in trials with their dogs.

    otherwise try a cat.
yupp, i know of on we used to have one named boomer....always hunting mice and rats....

its the Rat Terrier, you can find them at any local pet store.
Min pins were breed to kill mice and other rodents in the barns of germany. My min pin doesn't miss a thing. He finds them or anything else such as bugs and stuff.
pitbulls will kill mouses. in some states theres actually competitions where they have pitbulls catching mice and the first one to get their mouse wins.
most breeds would kill a mouse if they see a mouse, terrier or not, and maybe a rat terrier?
get a Schnauzer there breeded to kill mice....research on it you'll see.
    Uh, yeah, any of them.
    All of them!!!

Why is Of Mice and Men considered a Novella?

hi i am currently reading the book Of Mice and Men. It is a novella. But, i was wondering why is it a novella? and im not only talking about word amount or page lengthWhy is Of Mice and Men considered a Novella?
It is due to word count and length. It's about 100 or so pages I believe: therefore too long to be a short story yet too short to be considered a novel.

Great book anywayWhy is Of Mice and Men considered a Novella?
    Good question. Officially a ';novella is between about 17000, and 45000 words. But that doesn't answer your question does it. Boccaccio's ';Decameron'; (1353) was to be a hundred short stories told by 7 women %26amp; 3 men. In the Italian 'novelle' really means short story, but it took on different terms after the ';Decameron'; and Chaucer's ';Canterbury Tales.';

    A lot of writings that we think of as novels are actually classified as novella: Besides Steinbeck's, '; Of Mice and Men'; there is ';The Pearl,'; Melville's ';Billy Budd,'; Kafka's ';The Metamorphosis,'; Orwell's ';Animal Farm,'; Hemingway's ';The Old Man and the Sea,'; and ';Conrad's Heart of Darkness.';

So I'm not sure anyone can give you a concrete definition of a novella.
a novella originally meant ';little new thing'; (italian word) it is a considered longer than a short story, but not long enough to be a novel

    novelle-is plural of novel
    because it's short

Is there to another way to get rid of mice besides traps and poison?

Get a cat?Is there to another way to get rid of mice besides traps and poison?
Only other way I can think of is a cat....or two cats...or three cats...etc.....Is there to another way to get rid of mice besides traps and poison?
Glue traps are the best method to trap rats and mice . I found detailed information at http://pests.in
use some peanut butter and put it in the traps (just a little) that will make tha trap more attractive because of the smell, or if this doesn't work you should call pest control.
There are some electronic devices that you can plug in to a wall outlet that claim to drive away rodents, but I'm not sure if they work well. Some people claim they do.

Which mice can you mate? Can mice from the local pet store be mated?

Can mice from the local pet store be mated?Which mice can you mate? Can mice from the local pet store be mated?
Of course they can, but the real question is SHOULD you? What are you going to do with the babies? Do you think you can sex them fast/early enough so that they don't reproduce again? Are you going to sell them? Give them away (to possible snake owners)?

Think about the welfare of your animals before your own needs/entertainment.Which mice can you mate? Can mice from the local pet store be mated?
yes they can mate. Petsmart sexes their mammals. So each store only has male or female. You would have to find a male and female if you want them to mate. Petsmart does this so an animal doesn't go home pregnant then the new owner ends up with many when they only wanted one.
Yah. If both the mice are mice and of different sexes, of course they can mate.
    yes

as long as it's a male and a female

After no luck with glue traps, those live tip traps at the hardware worked for me with chocolate for bait (with some as a trail). I kept one or two for a while and noticed they spend a lot of time trying to keep clean, licking feet after walking on dust etc. So possibly not as unhygenic as you might think but obviously you need to keep things under control.I have field mice in my flat how can i get rid?
I had the same problem. First found how they got in. I fixed that. Believe it or not, mice are grain eaters just like squirrels. An old timer once taught me to wire [twistees are very good] a pecan to the trigger on the trap. It works!!! You can catch several on the same one without rebaiting.
I use the cheap traps with the metal trigger. I use chunky peanut butter and make sure a piece of nut is pushed under the metal hook (the curved piece used to hold bait) They'll eat the peanut butter and greedily try to work the piece of nut out. Never fails. Catch and release traps just recycle the mice and allow them to continue to reproduce. Sticky traps have never worked for me. The only thing they ever caught was our cat. By the way, cats aren't very good at curing a rodent problem. They'd rather play with them than kill them.
They like peanut butter...try the small traps. Also the sticky traps work. Make sure they can't find anything to eat.
I had the same problem i used glue and traditional traps poison and got a couple but they seem to adapt either you get a good rat killing cat or call a professional the longer you wait the harder it is they are noweigen rats and they will do extensive damage to wiring ductwork walls ect.
    Easy Ways

Get a Cat (for a few weeks should do it) depending on how bad the problem is.

Glue traps or just google traps.

cat urine you can buy at a pet store.

get rid of the food source.

homemade bait. put baking soda in some food. (this is a horrible death) they cant pass gas and their little stomach explodes

block off holes with broken glass and plaster mix, and when they dig it will slice their feet causing infection and death

a snake will eat them to..thats about all i can think of

    good luck

What to do in order to get rid of mice/rats in apts? what is done by landlords and if not what one should do?

I belive mice and rats are dangerous cretures to live with and i am just concern what people usually do? Do they tell the landlords to get rid of them? Or they do it themselves? And if landlord doesn't do anything what could be the next step (ex. complainting the helth department) I will really appreciate the suggestions. What to do in order to get rid of mice/rats in apts? what is done by landlords and if not what one should do?
If you are a good tenet then I would press the landlord to pay. If you are not, then I might mention that you have heard or seen rats. Cause once you get rats or mice in an apartment building it can be hard to get them out. If you pay your rent on time and keep a clean place and the landlord refuses to pay for the pest control, you should make a legal complaint. Also notify the health department.

    ';Under most state and local laws, you must offer and maintain housing that satisfies basic habitability requirements, such as adequate weatherproofing, available heat, water and electricity, and clean, sanitary, and structurally safe premises.';

I think SANITARY is a key word here. What to do in order to get rid of mice/rats in apts? what is done by landlords and if not what one should do?
Buy some decon. It's the renters responsibility.
    Get a cat.

I'm not joking either. A cat will take care of that problem --- and maybe make you a good pet also.
Go to higher authority - Apartment caretaker, Councillor, MLA, MP, CM, PM, United Nations or God (who made rats and associates)
well get some deacon rat poison or you can buy traps they don't cost that much and get some cheese to put on the trap keep the deacon away from children and you animals please read what is on the bow Robertdanny6969@yahoo.com

Good luck and may God bless you.
Two migrant workers in California during the Great Depression – George Milton, small, intelligent and cynical, but caring, and Lennie Small, a huge, but mentally limited man – come to a ranch in Soledad, California to ';work up a stake';. They are fleeing from their previous employment in Weed (this is not the Weed, California of Siskiyou County, California, but a different town on the Salinas river, near Soledad). There, the immensely strong, but childlike Lennie has been run out of town along with George because Lennie, who loves to stroke soft things, tried to stroke a girl's dress, and she thought he was trying to rape her. Once they are out of town and into safety, they hope one day to carry on with fulfilling their shared dream of finally settling down on their own piece of land. Lennie's part of the dream, about which he never tires of being told, is merely to have soft rabbits on the farm, which he can pet.

At the ranch, the dream for a brief moment becomes startlingly possible. Candy, the aged, one-handed swamper, offers to put in his few hundred dollars with Lennie and George so that they can buy the house and land by the end of the month. Then, the dream crashes down as the limited but volatile Lennie accidentally kills the young and attractive wife of Curley, the son of the ranch owner, while trying to stroke her hair. A lynch mob quickly gathers, with Curley at the lead. George, now realizing he is doomed to a life of loneliness and despair like the rest of the migrant workers, and wanting to spare Lennie a slow, painful death at the hands of the vengeful and violent Curley, shoots Lennie in the back of the head before the mob can find him. But the shot comes while Lennie is distracted, childlike, by one last retelling of the dream. Lennie's dream can be interpreted as critiquing the false hopes of the American Dream.

Even though it is such a depressing book at the end, it is a fantastic novel. It sucksthat Lennie had to die because he is mentally retarted, but innocent. The man has the mind of a child, and nobody understands that but his best friend and partner. Rather than let him die at the ends of that sick twisted little scrap known as Curley, he has to end Lennie's life on his own. While Lennie is caught in the middle of his own dream, his friend is forced to shoot him down in a twisted sense of protection. :(

    [edit] Themes

The key theme of the novel comes directly from the very poem from which the novel derives its title, Robert Burns: To a Mouse In the poem a mouse builds his home in an open field, planning for a future. Then one day a man appears and plows the very field the mouse now resides in, destroying the mouse’s home. The mouse’s hard work is now all for naught, and the man feels guilty for having destroyed the future of the mouse. Yet still, Burns calls the mouse blessed for not looking into or guessing the future, and fearing it, as humans must do.

Like Burns, Steinbeck’s work shows that every plan is fragile, and can often “go awry,” due to forces beyond our control. All of Steinbeck's characters have dreams, which they share in sequences which are depicted in being spoken aloud to other characters (reminding us that the novel is written in play-style). In the beginning of the novel we see that George and Lennie’s dreams may come true, especially with the meeting of Candy who can adequately contribute financially. However, we foresee also the pitfalls in their way: Lennie’s innocence (his inability to see or fear possibilities in the future parallels that of the mouse in Burns), Curley’s aggression towards Lennie, and the need of Curley’s wife to tell her dreams to someone when Curley cannot be bothered, which will end up exposing her to the danger of Lennie as she attempts to talk to him.] Inevitably, George and Lennie are unable to contend with these forces and Lennie is destroyed, while George is again made homeless. The cynical Crooks comes closest to the novel's final despair: “Nobody never gets to heaven and nobody never gets no land.”

Nearly every person in the novel has some type of severe physical or mental disability, and is suffering from the inability to form long-term family relationships in the context of a full community. Candy is the only character who cares for people other than himself, but is essentially passive and cannot even save his dog. The novel was rare, at the time it was written, for the attention it gave the poor and lower class, and especially the attention paid to the migrant workers of Southern California. Steinbeck's treatment of mental handicap is also rare for a novel of the time (other mentally challenged characters are also found in later Steinbeck novels).
Just read it! It's SOOOOOOOOO good! Plus, wtf! It's so short!
you can Get an analysis on the Internet. just put in your book title
its an awesome book.. you should read it.. and thers a movie on it also.. !!! which is also very good..
    Written by John Steinbeck.

You need to read this yourself, also you should not stop, with this one, you should read the rest of the books that this author

    has written!!!
';Of Mice and Men'; is a short novel by John Steinbeck. The two main characters are George and Lennie.

Both are poorer ranch workers. The novel is typical of Steinbeck as sympathetic to the underdog and and in this case shows just because men have to work very hard and live poorly, they are NOT crude.

George is intelligent, savvy, and Lennie is a very large strong man, but really a simple child mentally. George protects and guides Lennie around. Lennie is so slow he could not make it on his own. Basically George helps Lennie just out of the goodness of his heart. Occsasionally, because Lennie is such a fool George may play a joke on him, but that is the exception.

The story centers around the ranch where the two work. A son of the owner, Curly is really a bad person and picks a fight with Lennie to try and appear tough. Curly is a short person, who has a macho problem because of it. When Curly hurts Lennie, George tells him he can defend himself. The powerful Lennie grabs Curly's hand and grabs and squeezes it, badly crushing it. George, Lennie get along well with the other workers, such as Slim. Curly was clearly in the wrong. So all agree to say Curly hurt his hand in a machine.

Lennie and George had a dream of a rabbit farm. Lennie loves to hear George tell about it. One of the ranch hands has the money to pitch in for it, and this dream became a remote possibility.

Fatal trouble started when Curly's wife started talking with Lennie. George warned Lennie not to talk to her, because Curly was so jealous. The wife was really a loose woman. In talking with Lennie, she gets Lennie to start touching her dress, then she got scared and started hollering. Lennie then killed her, trying to shut her up.

Lennie fled, but Curly got his shotgun and with help was going to kill Lennie. George sees that Lennie is going to die an ugly death. So he talks to Lennie and then shoots him by surprise, so never knew what hit him; never fell in the hands of the mob.

An earlier incident related to the incident. An old man had a terribly sick old dog. He could not bear to shoot the dog, to put it out of its misery. Another ranch hand then shot the old broken down dog. After it happened the owner, he regretted not doing it himself.

The theme of this novel is simple. The dialogue is good and it moves fast. In comparison to ';The Grapes of Wrath,'; I think Steinbeck puts these workers in a different class. The Okies in ';The Grapes of Wrath'; were common and uncouth. But on the ranch we see workers, such as the old man, Slim, and others who live hardly, but are moral. They are offended by Curly's loose wife, and have character. They dislike Curly not because he is the boss' son, but basically, because he does not have character and treats people meanly. Slim and the old man can easily adjust to Lennie's very low intelligent, and do look down on him or try to take advantage of him.

There are some other details in the book, but that is the main story and meaning to me.
    Good book, try reading it.

  • What is a humane way to get rid of mice?

just bought a house and discovered two dead mice in the basement. my first reaction was to get mouse poison make sure any live ones are killed, but i'm trying to be a little more humane. plus i don't want them to die in random places and stink up the house, but i want to make sure they are all gone! any suggestions? What is a humane way to get rid of mice?
There are humane traps that will allow you to trap them and remove them to another area. This will only work if you figure out how they are getting in your house and block this access. Mice can get in though a hole the size of a dime! If you relocate them and they have a nest in your attic, or walls - they will find there way back. What is a humane way to get rid of mice?
Blast Joe Jackson's ';Stepping out'; in your basement. The sound of that will drive them, and every other living thing, miles away.
There's humane, and then there's natural. A cat will help tremendously.
Trap them and take them to a zoo.

How to get mice to stop stinking?

I have to female mice-and I have heard they arnt supposed to smell as bad as male ones---i have tried cleaning there cage more aften, using kitty litter instead of their usual bedding to mask the smell more-but nothing works

I really love them and my mom says that if they dont start to smell better I'm going to have to get rid of them

please help? How to get mice to stop stinking?
Definitely don't try anything like kitty litter again.

What type of cage do you have?

    How large is it?

How often do you clean it?

~The crittertrail type cages that are made of plastic trap odors in, making them seem a lot worse. Mice should be kept in well ventilated wire cages.

~A larger cage would give the mice more space, and take them longer to stink it up.

~Clean the cage every three days. How to get mice to stop stinking?
Maybe they are in heat, buy a male mouse and that might take care of it. You can donate the babies to most pet stores. Other than that if your keeping at cage clean there's not much else you can do. Are you giving them enough to drink that can make the urine stronger if your not because that is what your smelling either that or a discharge from an infection.
well. there is a spray that you can buy at a petstore for mice and hamsters. Its like a spray shampoo. you spray it on their fur and then scrub it in. once it dries. itll be good.
don't use kitty litter. maybe use the lavender scent bedding it's safe

How do I care for the New born Pups(incase you don't know pups are newborn mice)?

My Mouse had babys a week and 2 days ago. At first she started out strong then she gave she gets them all feed, but she had them in the look out and this week they're getting furry and starting to move. They Keep falling down the tube to the main floor. I'm afraid they might actually hurt them selves. Then they crawl all around the cage sniffing everything. Then over night the mother brings them back up. How can I stop them from falling? How do I care for the New born Pups(incase you don't know pups are newborn mice)?
Pups can fall pretty far without really hurting themselves. Make sure there is plenty of bedding where they would fall to, not a hard surface. Otherwise don't worry so much, the mom will take good care of them.

Just watch when they get to be 14 days old and their eyes open.....they get very jumpy then and are not afraid of heights, and don't have any caution, so if you ever handle them outside the cage you need to be careful between 14 and 25 days as they will jump anywhere, even if it means a huge fall. (like from table to floor....and do survive it just fine.) Mice can be weened (don't need their mom to feed them) after 19-21 days

Try not to disturb them at all first few days. A really freaked out mom may kill her litter, or not care for them. I would not suggest moving them. The mom put them where she thought they would be safest. How do I care for the New born Pups(incase you don't know pups are newborn mice)?
    Duct tape the little buggers!

J/K....Dont you have a way to block the tube for the look out?

I dont know what kind of set-up you have but most do have pieces to slide into the parts that connect ...to block some tubes.

If not, stuff something in the tube to fill it(sock, rag, etc.).

    Good luck
    aaaawwwww!!!!!!!! thats so cute

i just had to comment !!!!!

uhm?? block the tube from both ends so they cant fall down or go up...then they stay on the main floor and the mother doesnt have to carry them all the way up the tube
Rearrange the cage but I seriously doubt they will injure themselves.

thanks for you ideas/helpHelp! We have mice in our kitchen, how do i get rid of it/them?
traps from hardware store work best placed with peanut butter on the snap pad... the pellets work well but seeing its in the house i wouldn't advise it they hide to die. then the odor... put traps against walls or in back of cabinets and change bait to gum drops if peanut butter doesn't attract them good luckHelp! I second the motion on the old fashion mouse trap with peanut butter. I had a couple of mice in one of my houses, and I would set as manay as 4 traps in a square patter in a corn of the closet that they liked. That way, if they were able to successfully rob the peanut butter off of one trap, they would have to walk over it to get to the next trap further into the corner. This configuration proved to be nearly foolproof.
cats are the natural enemy of mice!
Mice don't live inside. They go outside.

First, you want to get fine steel wool, and stuff it where pipes go through the wall. Keep looking for place that they sneak in.

Second, get DeCon mouse poison. The mice eat this stuff, and go outside to die. It works great, and you don't have to deal with the dead bodies.
Get a glue trap. When one crawls in there throw on some heels or boots, raise your foot over the trap and SQUISH!

It's quick, easy and painless for mousey.
I would suggest buying poison pellets. They work well in the US and they are only about $3.00 USD.
