Hamsters have short, stubby tails and gerbils have long tails. Hamsters are nocturnal (ever heard that stupid wheel squeaking all night?) and gerbils are diurnal.

ohh uh uh, you just didnt! hamsters are cute and cudly and friendly i dong know much about gerbils but the pics ive seen make them look like large mice with long tails that have been on drugs since they were three weeks old, no offense. like i said not to big in the gerbil department. small animals are fun to have snd sometimes just watching them entertains me, sad huh? no! its not sad! that question is like whats the difference between a yorkie and a rott, arent they both just dogs? duh theres a difference.

Unlike hamsters gerbils dont have pockets but they do have a long tail. Hamsters have very short tails and they do not like to be with others. They will fight if they have to share terrirtory with other hamsters or other rodants. Gerbils love to have buddies on there sides.
