Our landlord put out poison and we cleaned the kitchen. We haven't seen any sign of them, but how can we know for sure? How can we make sure more do not come back? Should we be worried about any illness? We had mice in our house and cannot tell if we really got rid of them.?
You can make sure more mice do not come back by removing the things that tempt them. Keep all your food either in the refrigerator or well-sealed in chew-proof containers (metal, plastic, or glass). Mice can and will chew through plastic storage bags. Don't leave food scraps or crumbs out. Seal any holes you can find that lead to the outside.
It would be unusual for you to catch any illness from the mice, unless perhaps you ate food in which they had eliminated. We've had many mice in our house. I live trap them and release them outside, and I've never caught anything from them. If you are worried, clean areas where they have been with a light bleach solution.
If they come back, you will see droppings or evidence that they have been trying to get into your food.
You should be aware that poison is not a kind way to kill mice. They die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding, and it can take up to a week for them to die. If they die inside your walls, they will smell as they rot.
I've had great success with this humane trap in my house:

I've caught over ten mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:

If you do live trap mice, please be sure to check the traps several times a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home. It is much more cruel to allow a mouse in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. When you release the mice, do it in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants.
The absolute cruelest traps are glue traps. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. It can take three to five days for them to die.
It doesn't take much extra effort to be kind. You will feel better and so will the mice! Good luck!We had mice in our house and cannot tell if we really got rid of them.?
Look for the poop - that is always the first sign
Usually the type mice you have in your home do not carry disease. I would put out mouse traps for a while just to be safe. You need to find the space they are using to get in. It can be a very small hole in the woodwork or under your kitchen sink. When you find the source fill it with steel wool, this is the one thing they can't chew through. Good Luck
Glue traps are the best method to trap rats and mice.

I suggest you get a cat. I have two, we got mice in our garage, we laid down poison and the cats took care of the rest. With a cat you can tell if anything has gotten in because they will play with it until they die. Snakes, spiders, mice, you name it they will kill it. As for illnesses, for some I think it depends on where you live. If you live in NM or AZ I would worry about the Haunta Virus for sure. Anywhere else I'm not sure about that.
