Of Mice and Men is a classic, and also one that I have never read, though it is on my list to read this winter. However, here are a few of the numerous free on line resources that can help you with your study of this novel, most of which analyze the story, discuss themes and symbolism and other literary devices, and give character sketches.

I think George was more of the ';Best Friend'; type then a fatherly figure.

He killed Lennie out of love for he knew Lennie was in for a fate worse then death- he would be tortured endlessly before being killed in a horrific way for the ';murder'; of Curly's wife. He set George in a happy state of mind, having him imagine the farm with all the animals and crops before pulling the trigger.
If you read the book, you would have notice through out how George looked out for Lennie. He was more like a brother than a father figure because Lennie is also a grown man.
I would say how he always took care of Lennie. And how he always seemed to get him out of trouble. Like you said with him killing him he was doing it to protect him from what was to come to him.
