I just got 3 pet mice for the first time (new mice owner). Should I take them to the vet for a checkup or is that only necessary when they are ill/injured?Should I take my new mice to the vet?
if you havent owned mice before you should definately take them for a check up, as you wont know yourself what a healthy mouse looks/sounds like.
While you're there you can ask any questions you may have about feeding, training, handling and breeding (sometimes you can purchase a pregnant mouse from the pet shop without knowing if a male mistakenly got into the tank with the girls. Mice reach puberty at around 4-5weeks old)
mice are great fun - take care of them!!
PS there ARE mouse vets and regular vets are trained to look after mice. It is not about cost when they are sick, it is about taking responsibilty for your pets. their lives are in your hands now and will be for 1.5-3yrs!
I had a mouse which had 3 lumpectomys and also his eye removed to remove a tumour growing behind his eye.
The most common illnesses in mice and rats are cancers and respiratory infections. If you notice anything odd dont hesitate because they age much quicker than you'd think.Should I take my new mice to the vet?
I don't recommend taking your mice to the vet since mice don't need regular checkups and even in an emergency there's not a whole lot a vet can do. Also vets cost a lot and if something does happen to your mouse its usually cheaper just to get a new mouse instead of taking it to the vet since all that'll happen is the vet won't be able to do anything and you'll have spent heaps of money for nothing. Hope this helps, and good luck with your mice, they're awesome fun. :-)
They don't need regular checkups and to be perfectly honest, even in emergencies, there isn't a whole lot a vet can do for mice.
only when they are ill or seem not their usual self. but if you are really concerned take them
i think it is only necessary when they are ill/injured.
i didnt with mine. im sure they wont need it. but yes if they are injured or ill.
Ill or injured
Yeah I'm sure they could use some spares for testing.
i dont see why not....
